Breakfast is one of the number one things a person can start their day with to set a path for a great day. Yummy food in the morning has always been a favorite of mine. It became more than a time for delicious food when I became sleep deprived after the birth of my first son. Not only did I need to nourish my body to keep my milk supply in demand, I was also focused on losing the weight I had gained from pregnancy.
Oatmeal is a nutritious food and amazing for heart health and digestion. Due to galactogouges, new mothers trying to increase their milk supply also benefit greatly from consuming oatmeal. As a new mother I focused on eating oatmeal but did not want to fill it with sugary or unhealthy fats. It did not take long to discover a healthy way to prepare this oaty breakfast. The following is filled with about 15g of protein per bowl.
Ingredients:
1/2 C rolled oats (I like the oats from Trader Joe’s as they hold their form really well)
1 C Water
1 T cinnamon
1/4 of medium sized apple
2 T chia seeds
1 T shelled hemp seeds
1/4 tsp Pink Himalayan salt
1 Medjool date, chopped
Fill pot with water, cinnamon, and salt, and boil. Dice apple while waiting for water to boil and add to pot. Add oats and cook for 5-6 minutes. Remove from heat and cover for 2 minutes. Serve into bowl and top with chia, hemp, and date.
It is really an easy recipe that can easily be doubled or even quadrupled to feed an entire family. It is always in my rotation of breakfasts and I hope you will enjoy it as well.
